The Rotary Club of EdinburghBulletin 2260 - 25th May 2009President Tim Simpson returned from Grandparental Duties and welcomed members and our guest speaker to another enjoyable lunch at the Apex International Hotel. He congratulated and thanked VP Sandra for conducting last weeks business so ably. Tims grace was to the point: Good Food, / Good Meat,/ Good Lord, / Lets Eat!Assistant Secretarys Announcements:John Fordyce, standing in for Colin, gave the attendance as: 40 members,
no visitors and 1 guest, total 41. This is below the minimum we have contracted
with the Hotel and the club has had to pay for nine lunches. Members are
asked to make every effort to honour their commitment to attend lunch
every week.
Presidents Business:President Tim told members that he, VP Sandra, Fergus Gillies, Malcolm and Heather Shanks attended District 1020 Assembly at Napier University on Saturday. Features included videos of Interact Clubs with awards filmed at RIBI Conference Edinburgh, a film on Polio Plus and presentations from District convenors. President Tim learnt that apparently Rotary is only a hobby and reckoned that someone should tell that to Secretary Colin. (I imagine Sue would find that interesting too! Ed.)Tim also reminded members that we are looking to recruit new members to maintain our numbers which unfortunately have suffered attrition this year. Please bring potential members to lunch on 8th June. A large visitation of Italian Rotarians from Fiesole will come to Edinburgh on Tuesday 23rd June. We are holding a dinner at the New Club with champagne and four course meal and guest speaker. Cost is £50 , value is high please contact Iain Robertson. Guest Speaker: Ian Clark.President Tim introduced Ian Clark, our guest speaker. Ian completed a law degree at the University of Edinburgh, in spite of hailing from Glasgow and he works at the Caledonian University as a tutor in law. He is commencing legal traineeship with a large Scottish Practice. District 1020 sent Ian to Sydney as an Ambassadorial Scholar.Ian Clark: Ambassadorial Scholar.Ian Clark began by thanking the club and District 1020 for their confidence in sending him to Australia as an Ambassadorial Scholar. He also cleared up doubts in members minds as to why a Weegie came to Uni in Edinburgh. The answer was simple it was away from home but not too far to get his laundry done! Ian had always harboured an interest in social justice. When he was given the opportunity of the scholarship, Ian confessed that he knew little about Rotary but did his research so well that in interview he was told he knew more about it than some of the panel. He was at his first interview at Alasdair Seales house when an almighty crash was heard from upstairs. Alasdair excused himself to investigate and returned to say the ceiling in his bathroom had fallen in...Now where we? And he continued the interview. That gave Ian a flavour of the dedication of Rotarians that he was to experience during his time in Australia. Ian attended Sydney University and was warmly received by Rotarians and his host counsellor for the year. He visited 17 Rotary clubs and events. Help out and give back. Some think it is a lot of money to sponsor one individual, however, Ian saw it as an opportunity to give back. He took part in a 5-night sponsored bike run from Sydney to Canberra 360 km via the steep Macquarie pass. Together they raised A$4,000 and received local and Rotarian coverage in the press. One of his activities was to work with asylum seekers including an Englishman who had lived in Australia since he was two but was about to be deported to Britain where he had no family because no one had told him he should have applied for Australian citizenship when he was a lad. Ian is exploring clubs in his area in Glasgow and intends to join direct rather than through Rotaract. He reckons we could do with some young blood! |
