The Rotary Club of Edinburgh
Bulletin 2103 - 29th June
2006
REVIEW
Attendance
The evening meeting last Thursday contained a full agenda of Club business.
This included the annual Club Assembly, Rotary Prospect Evening, and the
Presidential hand over. The turnout was good for a Club Assembly. We had
56 members and 9 guests to bring the total up to 65.

District Conference in Aviemore
Our new President Fred Lawson admits that he is a new convert to attending
conferences. He believes that he has, however, been offered a much wider
perspective on Rotary through these meetings. All the small contributions
which the Clubs make, add up to something effective that really makes
a difference.
The Edinburgh Club has booked a 3-bed lodge for Friday 27th and Saturday
28th October at the Aviemore Conference Centre for the District conference.
This has been reduced in price to te same as staying in the hotel. We
need some lodgers!
Fred looks forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the conference
on 27th 29th October 2006. You are all invited to his Presidential
party from 5-7 pm on Saturday 28th in the Lodge at Aviemore. This includes
people not attending the conference.
The Lyon Connection
The Lyon Club have organised a visit to Turin in September. They are encouraging
us to join them and Bill Cantley is organising a delegation from Edinburgh.
FOCUS
Copenhagen Conference, Denmark
President Elect Fred Lawson with his wife Sue attended the R.I. convention
in Copenhagen between the 11th and 14th June. They joined 20,000 delegates,
including 11 from District 1020. Fred used his 3 votes for Edinburgh in
helping to elect Gordon McInally from South Queensferry as an R.I. Director
with responsibility for 2 world zones in Europe.
Rubbing shoulders with Rotarians from all over the world is an experience
every Rotarian should have at least once. You learn a lot about what we
are doing to help humanity in trouble and about the huge sums collected
and spent by Rotary Foundation each year.
The main themes were polio eradication worldwide, water, hunger and
literacy.
Each of the 3 days started with a plenary session with moving and professional
presentations, followed by interactive break out groups, lunches and discussions.
Fun was also on the agenda with jazz bands, a Swedish night and Nobel
Peace prize dinners in Malmo.
The most striking thing is that all clubs around the world seem to have
similar problems to our own. There is lots of information on the activities
of the wider Rotary movement. Everything is covered from Water Aid to
golf and flying holidays. Our own Feroz Wadia flew in with John Donne
and Eddie Hepburn in their private planes. Feroz is President of the International
Flying Rotarians and will be World President shortly.
PRATTLE
Back Door to The Carlton Hotel
It has been pointed out to The Carlton Hotel that the Waverley Entrance
to the Nairn Suite badly needs upgrading. It is an unpleasant sight for
visitors from overseas and indeed for our own members using this side
entrance to the hotel. We are grateful for the prompt reply that the hotel
will be improving this entrance. Painting the doorway is a start, although
probably not until after the festival. Fred Lawson has also suggested
a gate to keep out unwanted overnight dossers.
Pittenweam Arts Festival
The Arts Committee is considering an outing to the preview of the Pittenweam
Arts Festival on 4 August this year. This is an outstanding event primarily
in peoples homes. This year it is to double in size with the introduction
of a marquee for exhibits. If enough people are interested, we could hire
a bus and go together as a group.
Leslie Pringle Golfing Medals
This year the winner for the boys with an adjusted score of 62 was Blair
Pellie of George Watsons College and for the second year running Gillian
Simpson from Mary Erskines School with an adjusted score of 69. Alan Hately
presented the prizes.
President Judith Sischy by George Reid And as her year draws to an end
