This Week's Bulletin

Bulletin 1,990 - 8th January 2004

68TH YEAR AT THE BALMORAL

As George Brodlie said "A good symphony ends on the note on which it started." Although George, we aren't finished yet, we've only had 67 years at the NB. Pres. Neville modified a grace given by PP, Past Moderator Bill Johnston on our move from the NB in 1987.

He welcomed the sons and daughters present. Secy John asks that requests for classification changes be addressed to him. Council has approved a new one for Jinty Kerr on account of her new job. Note that to replace a Past President's badge costs £100 to the PP. Club Snapper Tom Gray laid out Festive Photos for members to take away. Bill Barr thanked members for 4 bin bags of cast off clothing for Poverty Action; closing date 16/1/04. Jinty had had a text from John Macaulay re Toy bags for delivery. Reg Robinson asked for those who had not collected parcels for delivery. We lost the Quiz v Jedburgh 18-21. Quiz Captain Colin Rodger won the toss and batted 1st, but our questions were more difficult - so we say. Liz McSwan had received a card from Prudence Bean, now in Worcester, Mass. Neville & Elisabeth had sent their cards Scout Post and reciprocated everyone's good wishes. Bob Hislop had a card from Edinburgh Cyrenians.

PP PETER WILSON Paul Harris Fellow

Pres. Neville awarded a PHF to Peter at his home, in view of his illness. Peter has given outstanding service to Rotary. He has been a member of 5 clubs and was project manager for a new club in Kiev. As our President, he chaired a 90th anniversary dinner in the Playfair Library and also a highly successful Burns Supper. Professionally he worked in Africa & the West Indies, then after Unilever, he became Head of the Agricultural College. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, he became their General Secretary. Ed Lucas recorded the event on film for the club. Peter was overwhelmed but grateful. Photos of PP Peter Wilson receiving his award.

ALMONER & ATTENDANCE 83

Melinda Wallace of the flashing red appendages: Members 76; Guests 7. Visits away by Jack Aitken & Dick Allan. Richard Allison has resigned on account of work pressures and Sir Roy Cameron is transferring to Haddington. Bulletins received from Rockland, Maine and Glasgow.

Christmas Parcels. Andrew Anderson

Thanks to all who helped. Many calls and cards have come to me from grateful recipients. I am indebted to Reg Robinson who collated distributors and recipients with immense efficiency.

SPORTS SECTION Bridge Branch

The last session was most enjoyable hosted by VP elect Judith Sischy and Mark. Next meeting chez Alex and Judy Wilkie Jan 20th.

WIN/LOSE DRINKS OFF THE EDITOR

Correct answers from Dick Allan, Mike Berry, Murray Donald, David Brown (best so far). Wrong Bob Hislop, Hamish Law, Stewart Kinsman (correct on 4th attempt). 1. In a race you overtake the second person. What position are you in? 2. If you overtake the last person, then you are? 3. Mary's father has 5 daughters. Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono. What is the name of the 5th? Answers next bulletin.

ROTARACT, MIKE BERRY

Mike Berry wants new members in the 18-30 age group, willing to help in the community and to make friendships. Do you know young neighbours, colleagues, family who might be interested?

RADIO PERSONALITY EDWARDS

Fred Edwards had his career unpacked by Colin Mackay on Radio Scotland. Fred started in the Merchant Navy with Blue Funnel out of Liverpool. He transferred to industry and then the Probation Service, later heading Social Services in Strathclyde. Fred quipped, it was like hearing my obituary, while still warm! Fred still roots for social justice and travels to Thailand and Cambodia.

DOUGLAS MILL, LAW SOCIETY

Douglas was educated at Paisley Grammar School and Glasgow University. He became Chief Executive of the Law Society of Scotland in 1997.

As a past member of the Renfrew Rotary, he moved from the Wild West to the Demure East. In the East primus inter pares is first among equals, but in the West it is shared cooking facilities! He has visited all Scotland's senior football grounds and has played 251 of the 543 golf courses. The Law Society was set up by Statute in 1949 and regulates 13,000 members and now serves 3 Parliaments. Having responsibility to the public, it looks for volunteers to serve on committees. He noted our Eve Crowe and Jack Aitken who have done their bit. A worry was the talk of change of ownership of firms to include non-lawyers. He felt this was a retrograde step.

Malcolm Wylie thanked Douglas, stating he was also a St Mirren supporter.
