SIOBHAN DOUCHERTY, Heritage Lottery Fund - "MORE THAN JUST OLD BUILDINGS"Siobhan graduated from Edinburgh University in Fine Art and now works for the Heritage Lottery Fund, assisting first time applicants. She is a yoga teacher and dances the Argentinian tango. Siobhan told us that Edinburgh has received £90 million over 9 years in 170 projects. Large iconic ventures include the restoration of the RSA, whose foundations were collapsing, and the Gallery Project to create public spaces underneath. Their grant was £7M. Similar undertakings are the Scott Monument to prevent masonry falling, the Hub where Festival Tickets are purchased and the Usher Hall. However smaller tasks are funded, such as The Water of Leith Trust, Greyfriars Graveyard, and the working past of trains, ships and steam. A newer development is into intangible heritage to include the whole community. Awards for all gives grants up to £5,000. A historical trail with plinths around town and a witty guide qualified, as did the Living Memory Association, documenting spoken history from the elderly. A controversial plan is for young roots to encourage teenagers into history. They talk about sectarianism and divisions and items that should not be celebrated. The idea is to shift attitudes for the public benefit. Douglas Sutherland thanked Siobhan stating that he bought a lottery ticket weekly but had not yet received £90M.
