The Rotary Club of EdinburghActivitiesGolf ClubThe golf club was formed on 3rd April 1913 only six months after the founding of the main Rotary Club in September 1912. The main purpose was to extend Rotary fellowship through golf outings and team competitions. The first outing trophy (Pentland Cup) was presented in 1913 by the inaugural President R.W. Pentland and was competed for during that season. One year later the first team competition took place between the Edinburgh and Glasgow Rotary Clubs. They played for the Dobbie Cup which had been presented by Sir Joseph Dobbie, President 1913-14. Since then the number of competitions and trophies for the golf members has steadily increased. Today they can compete in one way or another for no less than 18 trophies. This includes 6 outings (April - September), 3 team matches against the Rotary Clubs of Glasgow, Newcastle, and Dunfermline, a summer singles matchplay championship, a winter foursomes, and 4 trophies based on overall performance during the season. The golf club will also enter two or three teams for the Rotary District Championship held in August each year. The winning club has the "privilege" of organising the championship for the following year and Edinburgh have had this on a number of occasions. Membership of the golf club is open to any (male or female) member of the Rotary Club of Edinburgh. Currently the membership is in excess of sixty which is a significant proportion of the main club. The golfing ability of the members covers the full spectrum of golfing handicaps. Lowest handicap at present is seven and stretches up to thirty-six for some of the more senior members. Where applicable national club handicaps are used Those without handicaps are allocated a special Rotary handicap. The golf club is governed by a five person committee which includes the positions of Captain, Vice Captain and Secretary. The Captain is elected on a rolling basis, i.e. once on the committee one would normally become expect to become Captain after three or four years. The Captain serves for one year and demits office at the AGM/Dinner held in November each year. This is the highlight of the golfing social scene when the many trophies and awards are presented to the winners, and members enjoy a convivial evening usually entertained by a guest speaker.
